Subscribing to MSA-talk

Subscribe to MSA-talk by completing the information at https://minlists.org/list/msa-talk.minlists.org. You will be sent an e-mail requesting confirmation that you subscribed, to prevent others from gratuitously subscribing you to the list. You can use this same link to see the collection of prior postings, get a password reminder, change your subscription options, including bundling many messages together that can be delivered once per day, delivery disabling, or unsubscribe from MSA-talk.

MSA-talk is a hidden list, which means that the list of members is available only to the list administrators.

Your message

All subscribers to the list will receive your message. The most effective messages are those whose simple text content can be readily seen and understood in an on screen window that does not require scrolling. If you have additional or more detailed information, include a link to where it can be found instead. Avoid attachments. They will be unwelcome by users who must rely on slow connections. Attachments overwork the system, and are one criteria that many servers use to identify and eliminate spam.

Please Note: Many service providers have started in the last few months to use what appears to be a common set of anti-spam technologies, whose filtering or blocking parameters are ever-changing.  This technology filters e-mail messages based on characteristics that are common to spam.  No doubt the MSA-Talk listserv shows those features.

Among the more common service providers that block MSA-Talk off and on are MS’s hotmail.com, MS’s Outlook.com, Apple’s icloud.com, comcast.net, Bigpond.com (advising users to switch to their new Microsoft 365 accounts), cox.net as well as a scattering of .com, .net, .org. and .edu addresses that might be being hosted by Microsoft.  The service providers do not disclose or discuss detailed information on a per-message basis.

There is a fix: Block or allow settings for managing email addresses and domains, but it requires users to do so.  MSA cannot do so on their behalf.  Depending on the provider, the fixes involve such sequences as

  • “mail>options>block or allow”
  • “Settings>Description>Don’t move email to my Junk Email folder”
  • “Establishing a Safe Senders list”
  • “right-click the message>Junk>click Never Block Sender”
  • “Home tab on the Outlook ribbon> Delete group>Junk button>Junk Email Options…
